Watch Night or Freedom’s Eve

Watch Night or Freedom’s Eve is celebrated in many African American or Black Christian Churches. It celebrates and commemorates the Emancipation Proclamation (enacted January 1, 1863) which freed American slaves during the American Civil War. Watch night worship services are now annual New Year’s Eve traditions, recalling faith, freedom, strength, and community. It is celebrated on the evening of December 31.
