Navigating AI in Advising: Pitt Resources & the Principles vs. Performance Framework

Ends:
TBD
This workshop offers Pitt advisors a working orientation to AI on campus, followed by a practical framework for decision-making. We'll open with a fast-paced overview (~10 minutes) of the current AI landscape at Pitt including active projects and initiatives happening across schools and units, where to find guidance on policies and regulations around AI use, and the networks and opportunities available to staff, faculty, and students. From there, we'll introduce HAIL's Principles vs. Performance Matrix, a decision-making framework designed to help you make decisions based on identified values and principles about when and how to bring data or AI into a decision. Rather than starting with the technology, the framework starts with you by first naming the values or principles that matter most based on your role in a given decision, then identifying the performance metrics you're actually trying to move forward, and only then considering whether and how data, AI, or algorithmic tools can help advance those goals in a way that stays aligned with your values. This framework is flexible by design meaning that advisors can use it for their own decision-making, and it also offers a simple, values-first way to talk with students about the choices they're facing in the age of AI. Facilitator: Kendra Oliver, Managing Director for The Hub for AI and Data Science Leadership Register to attend Navigating AI in Advising.
