Foucault and Hayek are rarely read together, but Pennington argues they should be. Drawing on his new book, Foucault and Liberal Political Economy: Power, Knowledge and Freedom (Oxford University Press, 2025), he shows how Foucault's critique of power can sharpen Hayek's liberalism into a "post-modern liberalism" equipped to identify and challenge illiberalism and over-government in contemporary societies. He will discuss:
Where Foucault's account of power and knowledge complements, rather than contradicts, Hayek's case for freedom
What a post-modern liberalism offers for diagnosing un-freedom today
Q&A follows the talk.
