Sonic Provocations: Audio Montage Vehicles in Mrinal Sen’s Films

Hosted by the Humanities Center and featuring faculty fellow, Dr. Neepa Majumdar. Using a combination of written and videographic approaches, Neepa Majumdar’s project focuses on the most stylistically radical phase in the work of the Indian filmmaker Mrinal Sen (1923-2018), up to the 1970s. While this phase has been studied extensively by scholars and associated in part with the so-called Indian New Wave, Sen's use of sound has not received the attention it deserves for his political use of sound-image collisions and interruptive forms of audio montage. Respondents include Sean Morrissey from Studio Arts + Dr. Sanghita Sen, Assistant Professor in Visual Communication and Digital Cultures, Northumbria University Newcastle.
