The Art of the Stitch: An Intro to Japanese Stab Bookbinding
Explore the art of decorative bookbinding in this relaxed, hands-on workshop. Learn the fundamentals of Japanese stab binding, a traditional technique known for its beautiful, visible stitching. With roots in centuries-old East Asian bookmaking, stab binding offers a distinctive combination of structure and ornament, making the stitching itself an integral part of the design.
Learn variations and experiment with colorful threads and papers to create your own small softcover notebooks. Along the way, you’ll gain an introduction to basic bookbinding tools, materials, and techniques while discovering how simple changes in stitching create striking geometric patterns.
Designed with beginners in mind, this workshop is an opportunity to slow down, make something by hand, and explore your creativity in a welcoming, informal setting. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary! Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
