CERIS Book Discussion: Crescent Over Another Horizon

Ends:
TBD
Crescent Over Another Horizon: Islam in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino USA traces the story of Islam from Spanish colonial rule through today, covering Muslim and Morisco communities in colonial Spanish America, enslaved African Muslims, indentured South Asian laborers in Suriname, and contemporary Muslim communities in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Cuba, Martinique, and Trinidad. It closes with a look at the United States, including Muslim communities in South Florida and the experiences of Latina converts to Islam. Rather than treating Muslims as a small, separate "minority," the book shows how religion and ethnicity have intertwined across the region to shape identity and belonging in diverse ways. Discussion will be led by Dr. Keila Grinberg, Global Studies Center Faculty Fellow, Professor of History, and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies, with special guest author Paulo Pinto, Professor of Anthropology at Universidade Federal Fluminense, Brazil. A free copy of the book is available to participants who register and attend the discussion. Register here
