Some Notes on Becoming an Art Historian (HAA Colloquium)

Arnaldo Rodríguez-Bagué will present their doctoral research titled Caribbean-Yet-To-Come which examines the relation between performance, materiality, and territory in contemporary Puerto Rican and Caribbean Art. Caribbean-Yet-To-Come pays attention to Puerto Rican and Caribbean Islanders’ forced but geopoetic relations to the environmental forces that give shape to the Caribbean’s archipelagic lands, seas, and climates in a geohistorical threshold from which to Caribbean Islanders are not only compelled to politically contend with a profound intimacy with a Caribbean’s tropical nature always inflected by the long durée of colonial modernity. But, also immerse themself in an embodied speculative process of making sense of the planet’s climate change as well as the Caribbean many colonial pasts, while facing a futurity marked by a forced relation with the oceanic, geologic, and climatological realm of more-than-human agency.
