Mahmood Mamdani on Pitt in the 1960s: in conversation with Christel Temple

Join Pitt Alumnus Dr. Mahmood Mamdani (Herbert Lehman Professor of Government, Columbia University)for a conversation with Dr. Christel Temple about his time as a undergraduate student at Pitt during the Civil Rights era. Mamdani came to the University of Pittsburgh from Uganda in 1963, one of the hundreds of East African students who enrolled in American universities as part of the "Kennedy Airlift." As an undergraduate he joined the civil rights struggle,boarding a bus with fellow Pitt students for Montgomery, Alabama, where he was arrested. After returning to Pitt, he completed his degree in 1967 and went on to become one of the pre-eminent postcolonial scholars of his generation. On October 2, he returns to campus to talk to the Pitt community about his undergraduate days. Register for the event today!
