Driftwood Oven serves pizza and dance club vibes with After Dark

Dylan Thomas wrote, “Do not go gentle into that good night / Old age should burn and rave at close of day / Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” While not a scholarly consensus, many believe he was beseeching elder millennials to resist the temptation to skip the club and spend every night on the couch with their pets. At some point in the past few years, I stopped being willing to leave the house after sunset. Whatever ambitions for a big night out tend to vanish with the dying of the light. I’m tired. People my age have been working a quarter of a century already, and we have another quarter of a century to go before retirement, assuming retirement is even an option. In reaction to a global pandemic and a surge of fascism, I’ve turned my home into a mid-century modern cocoon, a place of such comfort that I’d rather be there than anywhere else. Sleepiness and coziness have become some of my defining qualities. (I do not believe in astrology, so the fact that I’m a Taurus is purely coincidental.) So when I was asked to write about Driftwood After Dark, an event whose very name throws down the gauntlet to my somnolent ass, I was skeptical of my ability to hang. I’m sorry, a 10 p.m. start? An end time simply described as “late”? What about my strict 11 p.m. bedtime? Driftwood Oven , a sourdough pizzeria and bakery in Lawrenceville , has, since March, been clearing out the tables — and moving in the turntables — for a house and UK garage pop-up party on the first Saturday of each month. The series is a collaboration between Driftwood Oven owner Neil Blazin and resident DJ Scuba Steve.
