Opening the program is the return of Alan Obuzor’s mesmerizing contemporary piece, Shadows and Light. Abandoning traditional stage lighting, the dancers illuminate the space themselves with hand-held, high-beam flashlights—casting dynamic shadows on striking choreography and slicing light through the darkness with sharp precision. The performance also features a collection of intimate works by Alan Obuzor and Kelsey Bartman, bringing versatile, emotional range to the stage, while Madeline Kendall Schreiber’s new work portrays the unraveling of a coven as their collective sanity begins to slip due to prolonged existence. Closing the program, Disintegration and Restoration of the Individual is an ode to the struggle of finding our individual identities in a society that pushes conformity. Choreographed by Resident Dancer Jillian Sinko, this work showcases the desperate desire to be our truest self, in a world that constantly tells us to blend in. This piece celebrates the beauty and freedom that comes from finding what lies beyond this pushed conformity.
