Social Housing — Why is it Important and What You Should Know

According to The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, social animals should be housed in stable pairs or groups of compatible individuals unless they must be housed alone for experimental reasons or because of social incompatibility. When this is the case, environmental enrichment can be provided to enhance animal well-being. In this webinar, Animal Research Protection (ARP) personnel will discuss the different types of housing for research animals and why this information is important for investigators. Responses to common questions will be provided along with guidance and resources for when exemptions from social housing are needed. This webinar is relevant for investigators, postdocs, graduate students, and staff members who maintain or are listed on active IACUC protocols. This is intended to be informative, and attendance is NOT required.
