Observe, Understand, Develop: Structural Biomimicry in Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering

Antonio D’Amore Associate professor of surgery, School of Medicine “Observe, Understand, Develop: Structural Biomimicry in Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering” Cardiovascular implants can restore function and save lives, but most cannot grow, repair themselves or remodel as living tissues do. D’Amore’s laboratory investigates whether structural biomimicry—reproducing the organization and mechanics of native tissues—can make implant architecture an active cue for tissue formation. Using engineered heart valves, chordae tendineae and blood vessels as complementary test beds, he will show how advanced manufacturing, quantitative tissue mapping, bioreactors, computational modeling and preclinical studies can reveal design rules linking structure, function and tissue remodeling. This integrated platform connects fundamental discovery with reproducible manufacturing, commercial translation, industry partnerships and a credible path toward patient impact.
