Current Topics in Privacy Seminar: Nuria Ruiz Garcia

In this session, we will talk about launching your career as a privacy professional, how to communicate the value you bring to the team once you land the role, how to frame privacy tradeoffs, the impact of AI on day-to-day work, and effective strategies for stakeholder management (e.g. getting buy-in from Legal, Product, and other teams). We will offer practical advice for working on large projects and in startups with a strong privacy component. Questions throughout the talk are encouraged; this session is intended to be a co-creation where we spend more time on the topics attendees feel are most relevant. Before curating datasets for the data science team at Netflix, Nuria Ruiz led the Data Engineering team at Wikipedia where she spent almost a decade building privacy-conscious data infrastructure from scratch and thinking a lot about privacy-respecting metrics. She worked in social, mobile, and web performance at Tuenti, a social network in Spain before those were a thing. Most of her learning in computer science, performance and scale was done hands-on, on the job, while working at Amazon in the early days. Nuria is a physicist by training and started writing software in a Physical Oceanography Lab in Seattle. A long time ago.
