This talk problematizes the ways that we conceptualize colonial Latin American art history, advancing new propositions for how to resituate canonical works and make space for understudied genres of visual culture. How can we begin to trace transimperial and intercolonial art historical constellations across the hemisphere during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries while still remaining attentive to historical and cultural specificities? This talk will delve into a series of case studies drawn from my recent research on art and insurgency in the eighteenth-century Andes and Atlantic world. It will conclude with a discussion of several curatorial interventions that apply a reparative lens to the arts of the Americas. Dr. Ananda Cohen-Aponte lecture is part of the Reparative Histories of Art & Architecture project funded by a grant from the AW Mellon Foundation. About the Speaker: Dr. Ananda Cohen-Aponte is an Associate Professor in the History of Art and Visual Studies Department at Cornell University.
