One of these in-betweeners is Samhain (pronounced SAW-wane), AKA Halloween, sitting roughly between the fall equinox and winter solstice.  “Liminal space” is a buzzword this year thanks to the movie Backrooms , but folklorists know that liminal space is not a maze where you get lost — it’s a lingering in the doorway, a crossroads where competing forces mingle, dissipate, merge. Autumn is one of these doorways, between the long hot breath of summer and the equally lengthy chill of winter (especially in Pittsburgh).
