University of Pittsburgh Critical Care Medicine Grand Rounds - Ian J. Barbash, MD, MS

Ian Barbash, MD, MS, is a practicing clinician, leader, and writer. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and as a pulmonary and critical care attending physician at UPMC. Ian is also Medical Director of Physician THRIVE, UPMC’s physician wellbeing programs. He graduated from Williams College and Harvard Medical School before completing residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and fellowship in Pittsburgh. After fellowship, he completed an F32 from NHLBI and K08 from AHRQ before transitioning into his current career in clinical leadership. Ian’s published academic writing comprises critical care health services research and narrative medicine, which has appeared in JAMA, NEJM Catalyst, Annals of Internal Medicine, and several pulmonary and critical care journals. As a survivor of the intensive care unit himself, Ian’s work is also informed by his personal understanding of critical illness and its aftermath. He writes and speaks about this experience to promote empathy for both healthcare professionals and the people they serve. Ian lives in Pittsburgh with his wife and four children.
