PLOT SUMMARY Aster lands in a remote corner of the Southwest seeking an interview with Cassandra: an enigmatic wellness guru with scores of online followers.

At her rural retreat, he connects with Van, who he went to school with, and who has been managing Cassandra’s property for years, along with Cassandra’s daughter Sofie, and Van’s mother, Nan. Aster is skeptical of Cassandra’s claims of supernatural gifts.

Cassandra arrives with a new acolyte in tow: Summer. Summer is recovering from a traumatic past –she seeks Cassandra’s healing abilities; searching for structure, order, stability, and meaning. Van and Aster are both drawn to Summer.

Sofie has developed a crush on Aster–attracted to his stories of the wider world.

Aster is wracked by guilt and loneliness. Aster agrees to submit to Cassandra’s therapy methods–as part of his documentary.

Nan warns Cassandra that finances are unravelling.

Sofie confides in Summer (through a therapy exercise) that she has feelings for Aster.

Van confesses his newfound love to Summer: he is awkward and stumbling.

Summer begins to feel trapped by Cassandra–and overwhelmed by all of the desire she is attracting. Cassandra is beset by spiritual darkness and demands to be the center of attention–she demands total devotion and purity from Summer.

Summer engages in a therapy exercise with Aster to try to rid herself of feelings for him–it backfires; they kiss. They agree to forget it ever happened.

Cassandra announces that she has received a revelation: the Ranch must be sold to finance something greater.Van is outraged–he had previously donated the land, the facilities, years of work to Cassandra’s cause. He denounces Cassandra as a fraud and wails over wasted years. Cassandra insists that he engage in a healing session with her.

In the session, she orders him to shoot her. He resists–then finally on her urging, relents. He pulls the trigger. The gun does not fire. Cassandra declares this a miracle; she explains that this action has purged the darkness from Van’s heart–and revealed his total commitment to her. Van acquiesces– and agrees to the sale of the ranch.

Cassandra tells Aster that part of the sale of the ranch will go towards fully financing his documentary. Aster accepts the money in the presence of Van. It is Van’s final defeat. Summer confesses to Aster that she has lost her faith in Cassandra. Aster says she should leave with him. She rejects him with clarity–knowing her place is in the desert.

Cassandra leaves with Nan in tow–headed to see a larger plot in Florida. Summer is leaving with her. She says goodbye to Aster, kissing him again. Aster destroys his recordings, then leaves.

Sofie and Van gaze out on the desert. Sofie is optimistic. They will find another patch of desert, one without prophets or grifters–and make it bloom anew.
