Blood Transportation Specialist

Respond to home fires and other local disasters?

Disaster Action Team : Be part of a team that provides food, shelter, comfort and care for families affected home fires, floods and other disasters.

Disaster Duty Officer : Volunteer from home to monitor calls for Red Cross services and dispatch responders to local disasters.

Help at a blood drive?

Blood Donor Ambassador : Help create a positive donation experience at Red Cross blood drives by engaging with donors, answering their questions and supporting them through the recovery process at the refreshment table.

Transportation Specialist : Deliver lifesaving blood products to area hospitals from one of our processing facilities in Johnstown or Wilkes-Barre, PA.

Support veterans, military members and their families?

VA Hospital or State Home Volunteer : Provide social interaction, fresh fruit and comfort items to active-duty military members, veterans and their families at Veterans Affairs Hospitals or Pennsylvania Veterans Homes.

Service to the Armed Forces Caseworker : Ensure military families are supported and help meet their needs during an emergency.

Prepare children for emergencies?

Preparedness Volunteer : Provide free emergency preparedness education to community members through courses such as Be Red Cross Ready, Prepare with Pedro and hands-only CPR. (Additional background checks required for youth program volunteers in Pennsylvania).

Support from home as a virtual volunteer?

Caseworker for Disaster and/or Service to the Armed Forces :**** Ensure people receive the assistance and resources they need to recover from a disaster through virtual communication.

Screening Team : Speak with prospective volunteers by phone to match their interests, skills and experience with a volunteer position.

Use your skills as a nurse or other health professional?

Disaster Health Services : Licensed nurses and EMTs can use their professional skills to provide care and support to families affected by disasters both locally and across the country.

Disaster Mental Health : Licensed mental health professionals can use their skills to provide comfort and guidance to people affected by disasters both locally and across the country.

Resiliency Workshop Facilitators : Licensed mental health professionals can use their skills to provide resiliency education courses to military families.

Q. How do I choose which volunteer opportunity is right for me?

Once you have completed the application process and background check, a volunteer recruiter will contact you to discuss volunteer opportunities and together you will determine a match. Consider how much time you are interested in dedicating, your skills and talents, where you are willing to volunteer, and what your schedule is.

Q. What is the time commitment required to volunteer?

Time commitments vary according to the area in which you choose to volunteer. It can be as little as 4 hours per month to 40+ hours per week. The specifics will be discussed with you by a recruiter once your application and background check are received in Volunteer Connection, our volunteer management system.

Q. How can I volunteer for disaster relief efforts?

The first step to becoming a Red Cross Disaster Responder is to apply using our volunteer management system Volunteer Connection. You will be required to create a profile which takes less than 5 minutes and submit your volunteer application through the system. You will also be required to submit a background check. Upon receipt of your background check and application, you will be contacted by a recruiter to discuss next steps.

Q. How old must I be to volunteer with the American Red Cross?

A. To volunteer with disaster services, you must be 18 years old. A variety of opportunities may be available for Youth Volunteers under the age of 18. Please contact your local chapter for more information.

The American Red Cross has an ongoing critical need for blood and platelet donations. You can make an appointment to give blood or platelets at RedCrossBlood.org.
