Adult ESL Tutor - Volunteer

Help Adult English Language Learners Build Skills, Confidence, and Opportunities for Success!

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit's Adult Education ESL Program is seeking volunteers to serve as tutors for adult English language learners. Volunteers will work individually with students or in small groups to provide additional instruction, reinforce classroom learning, and help students strengthen their English language skills.

Tutors will support students in developing their reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, and everyday communication skills. Tutoring will be based on individual student needs and learning goals, providing additional instruction and practice to support progress in the classroom and everyday life.

Volunteer Commitment and Scheduling

Commitment: 3 hours per week

  • Tutoring sessions are generally scheduled for three hours per week.

  • Short-term opportunities are available for a commitment of four to five weeks.

  • Flexible scheduling can be arranged based on volunteer availability and student needs.

While short-term tutoring opportunities are available, we strongly prefer volunteers who can make a longer-term commitment. Consistent tutoring relationships allow students to build trust, establish learning routines, strengthen their skills, and make greater progress toward their educational and personal goals.

Students receiving tutoring support must also be enrolled in and regularly attend the AIU Adult Education ESL classes. Tutoring is designed to supplement classroom instruction and provide additional individualized support, not replace regular ESL classes.

Qualifications and Experience

You do not need to be a certified teacher or have previous ESL teaching experience to volunteer. We welcome individuals who are patient, dependable, encouraging, and interested in helping adults from diverse backgrounds achieve their goals. A willingness to share your knowledge and support someone else's learning is what matters most.

Make a Difference Through Education!

Your time and commitment can help an adult learner gain confidence, improve communication skills, pursue educational and employment opportunities, and become more engaged in the community.

Share your knowledge. Support lifelong learning. Open doors to opportunity.
