Pittsburgh City Planning Vacant Land Program VISTA

The Department of City Planning (DCP) in Pittsburgh is dedicated to shaping the city’s future through innovative and sustainable planning practices. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for residents by developing and implementing comprehensive plans that promote equitable growth, vibrant communities, and resilient infrastructure. We focus on revitalizing underutilized spaces, improving land use, and fostering community engagement to create economic opportunities and improve living conditions across the city. Through collaboration with local stakeholders, the DCP leads initiatives that drive strategic development and ensure Pittsburgh remains a dynamic, inclusive, and thriving urban environment. The program has been successful in advancing the careers of VISTA members, who are given opportunities for professional development through classes, conferences, etc. 70% of VISTAs have gone on to positions at community non-profits, while 30% have pursued higher education, often supported by the end-of-service education award.

Member Duties : The VISTA will guide the development and enhancement of vacant property initiatives by engaging communities to facilitate the adoption or utilization of vacant lots and assist in the development of a Public Art Toolkit. Other key duties: Conduct outreach to promote temporary use and opportunities for permanent reuse of vacant property through the Public Art Toolkit, Adopt-A-Lot temporary stewardship program; Assist in developing and dispensing informational materials and resources to community organizations working to reduce blight and vacancy in low-income areas of the City of Pittsburgh.
