CASA of Allegheny County trains volunteer Community Counselors (Court Appointed Special Advocates) to advocate in family court for children who have experienced abuse, neglect, or trauma. Volunteers complete a 30-hour pre-service training, are sworn in by a judge, then commit to one case at a time (typically 12-18 months) — interviewing the child and adults in their life, tracking case progress, and writing reports for the court. Background check and continuing education required.
