Pittsburgh Bluegrass: Open Bluegrass Jam (Traditional Circle) // Starlight Lounge (Blawnox)
Pittsburgh’s longest-running open bluegrass jam has been going strong for 25 years and counting every Tuesday night at the Starlite Lounge. Music gets going around 7:30 p.m. and often runs as late as midnight. There are rotating hosts, so if you’re new to the jam, be sure to introduce yourself to the group! Players of all experience levels are welcome on acoustic stringed instruments. The focus is on creating a welcoming space where beginners can learn and advanced players can stretch out. Some songs will be simple and slower-paced, while others may move faster or include more complex arrangements. Newer players are encouraged to join in at their own comfort level, and experienced musicians are asked to keep in mind that others may be learning by following along. The goal is to keep the music fun, respectful, and rewarding for everyone. Guests under 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. FREE for pickers, FREE for listeners! Come early and have some of the best pierogies in town! Starlite is located at 364 Freeport Rd. in Blawnox, just up Route 28 from the city. Free street parking is available in front of the venue and two doors up in the Moondog’s parking lot. New to a bluegrass jam? Breaks are typically “handed out” with a nod or verbal cue, and if you’re not ready to take one, it’s perfectly fine to shake your head or pass it along to the next person and keep playing rhythm. Listening & Playing Together Listening is as important as playing. Keep your volume balanced so the singer or soloist can be heard, and avoid noodling between songs. Beginners are encouraged to jump in where they
