Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival rides a new wave of indie filmmaking

In one of the most unlikely developments of 2026, the movies are all the way back. Not just kind of back, like during the so-called Barbenheimer craze , but back and seemingly here to stay. And perhaps, even more shockingly, they’re back on the strength of original, fiercely independent ideas and creators. The hit horror film Obsession was made for under a million dollars by a director most famous for TikToks and a YouTube short film. It’s made over $334 million. Backrooms also originated on YouTube, the brainchild of a teenager using the VFX software, Blender, on his laptop. As of publication, it has crossed $275 million at the global box office. None of this is to say that box office is the driver of culture, or taste — it’s usually the opposite. But indies are having a moment not seen since the 1990s, and it makes the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival (PIFF) — happening at the Parkway Theater in McKees Rocks from Fri., June 26-Sun. June 28 — all the more relevant as a case study to the importance of regional festivals. Founded 19 years ago by now-director Ronald Quigley, PIFF was meant to serve as a showcase for anyone and everyone passionate about film. Whether it be short films or features, narrative filmmaking or experimental projects, animation or music videos, the only requirement here is a love of the craft. “That’s why I started the festival in the first place, being an independent filmmaker myself,” Quigley tells Pittsburgh City Paper . “But the number one thing that holds every filmmaker back is the funding. So you really have to give it to the local filmmakers who come out of their pockets and put a film together — that’s what I love.” The 2026 festival includes screenings of over 60 films, two script selections, and an opening night ceremony.
